When you begin OEC training, many new terms will be used. Here's a few definitions to help you along.

|
During the day, patrollers take over waiting

now refers to our control and com center next to aid room |

CPR
|
CardioPulmonary Resuscitation: a technique
for reviving people whose hearts have stopped beating. Also a class
that teaches the technique along with others needed to maintain
someone's breathing and blood flow. |

EMS
|
Emergency Medical System: a government
sanctioned system of people who are licensed to provided emergency
medical care: EMTs, paramedics, nurses, doctors. |
|
EMT
|
Emergency Medical Technician: a licensed
first responder. |
|
F/A
|
First Aid: emergency care given to someone
before regular medical care is available. |
|
First Responder
|
The person who is first on an accident
scene, who evaluates the scene, calls for the appropriate equipment,
and provides limited medical care. |

Hill Captain
|
Volunteer patroller in charge of organizing
the volunteers for that day. |

|
Outdoor Emergency Care: a course taught
by NSP members on how to provide emergency care and rescues in the

PR
|
Public Relations: a necessary evil. Patrollers
are viewed as ambassadors of the ski area by the ski area management
and the customers. Consequently, in addition to their safety duties,
they need to be generally helpful -- for example, talking to customers
on chair lifts, giving directions, etc. |
